Acme Opens Environmentally Friendly Store

MALVERN, Pa. — Acme Markets here, a division of Supervalu, announced the opening tomorrow of what it called the “first environmentally friendly supermarket in the Philadelphia area.” The store, located in Glen Mills, Pa., was built according to the specifications of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system from the U.S. Green Building Council. The store has educational plaques strategically placed in various departments to help customers understand the “green” initiatives and to show what Acme is doing to improve the environment and the community. “We want to use this building to demonstrate the environmental innovations that are possible with today’s technology,” said Judy Spires, president of Acme, in a statement. The store has over 30 skylights and uses energy-efficient lighting systems in refrigerated cases. It also employs accent lighting and regulates overall store illumination to save energy consumption by 64% while preventing spoilage and heat emissions. In addition, the installation of water-saving fixtures will conserve approximately 112,000 gallons of drinkable water per year in the store.
