In the past two years Nutiva, a brand of hemp, coconut, chia, and red palm organic superfoods, has donated over $750,000 to support non GMO causes.  These funds come from a company commitment to donate 1% of all sales to support sustainable agriculture, say company officials, adding that total funds donated currently tops $3M.  In addition, all Nutiva products are non-GMO verified.  This includes CHIApple and O’Coconuts, the two newest products launched by Nutiva. In 2013, Nutiva solidified its philanthropic commitment by establishing the Nutiva Foundation with the mission of nurturing people and planet by supporting the advancement of healthy communities and ecologically sustainable agriculture. “The establishment of the Nutiva Foundation allows Nutiva to expand and focus more on our corporate giving, which is a key component of our mission,” says John Roulac, Nutiva’s CEO and founder. According to company officials, grant recipients have included:

  • Sustainable farming organizations such as: Farmer Veteran Coalition, Pesticide Action Network, Center for Food Safety, Rodale Institute and Women’s Earth Alliance.

  • Organizations promoting healthy communities such as: Ceres Community Project, New York Coalition for Healthy School Food, Teens Turning Green, One World Children’s Fund and YMCA (Richmond, CA).

  • Food and environmental activism organizations such as: the Organic Consumers Association, Food Democracy Now!, GMO Inside, Non-GMO Project and Vote Hemp.

  • Organizations planting trees and gardens such as: Common Vision, Compass Green Project, Friends of SF Environment, Urban Tilth and the Watershed Project.

To help support the advancement of healthy communities worldwide, Nutiva is actively involved with the non-GMO movement as a major component of their giving program. Since the company was founded in 1999, Nutiva has had a non-GMO policy and only sources non-GMO ingredients, company officials say. John W. Roulac co-founded the advocacy group GMO Inside to mobilize consumers via online campaigns and social media. They successfully convinced General Mills to remove GMOs from Original Cheerios and are now focusing their efforts on Starbucks, asking them to stop using milk from cows fed GMO grains. All Nutiva products are certified organic, verified non-GMO and Kosher Certified.
