Kenneth Downey Sr. (left), the 24-unit chain's director of bakery sales and merchandising, told SN that he works very closely with all his vendors, from large to small. “They are key to helping us maximize our sales. It really is a true partnership.” Downey is shown with Judy Spires, chief executive officer of Kings Markets.

Downey praised Kings' in-store bakery vendors for making communicating easy. “They give us top quality definitely, but also there's mutual respect, and we're able to exchange information in a timely manner. That communication is so important. It means more sales for all of us.”

Downey, in the company's newsletter this week, thanked his vendors and his associates and colleagues for helping make Kings In-Store Bakery award-worthy.

The annual award is made through nominations by vendors.

“I'm pleased to say we received three times the votes the closest other operator received,” Downey said.
