Dannon Light & Fit Greek Yogurt tops IRI’s list of the most successful food product launches last year.

The company’s 2013 “New Product Pacesetters" list identifies food and beverage product introductions with average year-one dollar sales of $35 million.

Health and wellness was the prevailing theme in both food and nonfood, according to Susan Viamari, IRI’s Thought Leadership editor.

“Interest in health and wellness is everywhere, from food and beverages to beauty care and home care,” Viamari told SN.

Seven of the Top 10, and 73 of the top 100 food and beverage products launched in 2013 offer a healthier-for-you benefit. Along with Dannon, two other yogurt lines made the Top 10: Yoplait Greek 100 and Müller Yogurt.

"Yogurt is a quick-and-easy way to satisfy hunger, and get a high level of protein,” she said.

The list comes at a time when about 190,000 new UPCs and 9,500 new brand launches hit the shelves in 2013.

Fiber and/or whole grains was/were found in 42% of the new launches. In the non-food arena, average year-one dollar sales for the Top 100 brands were $34 million. Nearly half (48) of the Top 100 non-food Pacesetters deliver wellness.

Also, for the first time in recent Pacesetter history, three home-care products - Tide Pods, Ajax Triple Action and Downy Infusions - made the Top 10.

In the convenience store channel, beer, liquor, tobacco and energy drinks dominated.
