WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Lowes Foods kicks off Bag Childhood Hunger today, an annual month-long food drive to help fill local food bank pantries and feed hungry children.
Lowes Foods began the program three years ago after learning that 33% of the people served by the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina emergency assistance programs are children under the age of 18. During the summer months when school is not in session, these children do not have access to the free or reduced-priced meals they receive during the school year.
Shoppers can contribute by making a cash donation of $1 to $5 at checkout or purchase a preassembled food bag to drop in the Bag Childhood Hunger food bins at the front of each store. Selling for $5.24 and $6.17, the preassembled bags are also available for purchase online.
The food collected through Bag Childhood Hunger is distributed to partner agencies by several area food banks.
