Daniel J. McLaughlin Jr., 60

niel J. McLaughlin Jr., a widely published professor of food marketing, died here May 28 at the age of 60. The cause of death was not immediately known.

McLaughlin taught at St. Joseph's University, Philadelphia, for more than 30 years and was chairman of the food marketing department from 1975 to 1982. He was an associate professor of food marketing and a Gerald E. Peck Fellow of Food Wholesale and Retail Research at the school at the time of his retirement in 1993.

McLaughlin is survived by his wife, Aggie Leitz McLaughlin; a son, Dan; a daughter, Kathy O'Connell; and a grandson.

The family suggests contributions to St. Joseph's University Food Marketing Scholarship Fund, St. Joseph's University, 5600 City Ave., Philadelphia 19131.

Dick Brown

HOUSTON -- Funeral services were held here June 12 for Dick Brown, president and chief executive officer of acquisitions for Mission City Management, San Antonio.

An industry leader, Brown was a senior vice president of the National Grocers Association, Reston, Va., from 1987 to 1992. He succumbed to cancer after a painful and courageous fight, the NGA said.

Susan Cheek Needler, 51

FINDLAY, Ohio -- Services were held here last week for Susan Cheek Needler, who died June 13 following an extended illness. She was 51.

Needler was co-owner of Fresh Encounter Inc., a supermarket management company with 16 stores throughout western Ohio under the banners Great Scot Supermarkets, Community Markets and Sack 'N Save.

She joined CWC Cos., now Fresh Encounter, as director of public relations in 1991. In 1996, she purchased the company with her husband, Michael S. Needler, and became vice chairwoman and director of marketing.

She is survived by her parents, Carroll W. and Mabel A. (Smith) Cheek, of Belleair, Fla.; her husband; three daughters; a son; a brother and a sister.
