The latest round of retailers to promise to transition to cage-free eggs includes C&S Wholesale Grocers, Alex Lee Inc. and Tops Friendly Markets.

C&S has pledged to change over its private label brands to cage-free eggs by 2025, as well as honor the commitments of the retailers it supplies.

“C&S expresses its support for the egg industry’s overall effort to move in this direction and will assess a quicker transition if supply levels could support its consumer demand,” the wholesaler said in a statement.

Similarly, Alex Lee, parent to Lowes Food Stores, said it would transition to all cage-free eggs in its stores by 2025.

“This step is an outcome of the company’s independent review of industry capability and readiness, and represents a commitment to continuously improving the food supply chain while maintaining the affordable prices that customers expect,” the company said in a statement.

Tops has committed to sourcing 100% cage-free eggs from local farms by 2025.

“As a leading, locally-owned regional grocer, Tops Friendly Markets has always embraced and supported a buying local philosophy,” the retailer said in a statement.

Separately, Wakefern Food Corp. updated its cage-free pledge to include all eggs in its stores, not just private label products. The retailer had previously received criticism from an animal welfare activist group over alleged abuse at one of its suppliers.

“Making the transition to cage-free will require time and financial resources for the industry. While producers and retailers move toward their cage-free goals, we will continue to examine the latest animal welfare standards and best practices to ensure we provide you with the best choices available to help you care for and nourish your family,” the company said in a statement.
