CHANDLER, Ariz. — A Bashas' store in Goodyear, Ariz., that closed Oct. 9 — one of 23 underperforming units the chain closed since filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection — is scheduled to reopen Saturday at the request of the developer of the shopping center where the store is located.

Now it's up to consumers to justify keeping the store open, Bashas' executives said.

Bashas' opted to reopen the 50,000-square-foot store, which was only 10 months old, after the developer, Westcor, "came to us and made an offer to lower the lease that was good enough for us to come back and try to make a go of that store," a chain spokesman told SN. However, the store will close an hour earlier that previously, with more emphasis on items that sold well and less on those that didn't, he said.

Edward N. "Trey" Basha 3d, vice president, legal and financial affairs, said in a statement the company is depending on local consumers to keep the store in business. "We need the community's support to ensure this store's long-term success. The fate of this supermarket is in the hands of grocery shoppers in the [area]. This is their Bashas', and we will continue to ask for their input every step of the way."
