Brookshire Grocery Chairman Emeritus Dies at 81

TYLER, Texas – Services were held here Tuesday for Bruce Glenn Brookshire, chairman emeritus of Brookshire Grocery Co., who died last Friday.

TYLER, Texas – Services were held here Tuesday for Bruce Glenn Brookshire, chairman emeritus of Brookshire Grocery Co., who died last Friday.

His parents, the late W.T. and Louise Brookshire, founded the chain.

In 1950, Bruce Brookshire left the University of Texas in Austin to work alongside his father in the grocery business. There were 10 Brookshire’s Grocery Stores when he joined the company.

After his father’s death, Bruce Brookshire became the company’s chairman. During his 30 years in that post, he grew the company to more than 150 stores in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. He was an avid outdoorsman and also contributed to many charitable efforts, the company said.

He is survived by his wife, Carrie, two sons and nine grandchildren.
