C&S Faces Fine for Warehouse Safety Violations

HARTFORD, Conn. — The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration here has proposed fines of $133,000 against C&S Wholesale Grocers for alleged “repeat and serious safety violations” at its warehouse in Windsor Locks, Conn. According to OSHA, the wholesaler was fined for three repeat citations, including metal storage racks that were unstable; open-sided work platforms lacking railings; and ungrounded metal dock lights. C&S was cited for the same violations in 2004, 2005 and 2006, OSHA said. An inspection this January also turned up several new violations, OSHA said. A spokesman for OSHA told SN that six-figure penalties are relatively infrequent and usually result from either willful or repeat citations. C&S, based in Keane, N.H., has 15 days to contest to the citations.
