Canada Superstore workers strike a new deal
Terms include a wage increase and more hours for part-time workers
A month after Canadian workers at Superstore, No Frills, and Extra Foods voted to strike, the union representing the Superstore group announced that a new five-year collective bargaining agreement has been approved, reports CTV News Winnipeg.
The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 832, which represents the thousands of workers at the grocery stores owned by Loblaw, said the new contract includes wage increases that are the highest the union has negotiated in 25 years and scheduling changes that will make it easier for part-time workers to get more hours.
“We could not have achieved this contract without the strong strike vote and support that Superstore members gave their co-workers on our bargaining committee,” Jeff Traeger, president and lead negotiator with UFCW Local 832, said in a statement. “This bargaining committee worked long days and late nights to ensure we had significant improvements for all Superstore workers.”
UFCW Local 832 will now focus on negotiating a new deal for 400 No Frills workers.
