Firm Sees Slow Recovery for Retailers

LOS ANGELES — The outlook for retailers in general looks bleak, with no recovery until 2010, and it may take a few more years for supermarkets to experience real growth, Lois Huff, senior vice president of Retail Forward, Columbus, Ohio, said at the consulting firm’s conference here yesterday. While sales growth will increase within a couple of years at clubs and supercenters, among other retail segments, supermarkets and drug stores will still be faced with the prospect of ongoing high inflation and no growth for a while longer, she predicted.
