Food Basics Workers Taking Strike Vote

LITTLE FALLS, N.J. — Food Basics workers at eight stores in New Jersey could walk off the job this weekend, citing a lack of progress in contract negotiations with owner A&P. The union representing around 900 workers, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 464A here, reportedly were taking a strike vote Wednesday.

In a message on its web site, Local 464A said A&P was unwilling to grant any pay increases, any increases to the pension fund for workers, or schedule any increases in hours for workers. It was also asking employees to contribute more to health care.

“We recognize that Food Basics, as a banner of A&P, is going through difficult economic times,” the union said. “Even under these difficult economic conditions, we find the position of the company unreasonable, and we could be headed for a strike.” The current contract expires Oct. 16.
