AVENEL, N.J. — The Foodtown cooperative here yesterday said one of its members will rebrand three stores to the FoodKing banner, effective this Saturday.
The stores — located in the New Jersey towns of Roselle, Springfield, and Union — are all owned by the Ginsberg family. The stores will offer expanded perishable departments, including produce and deli, and will continue to carry the Foodtown private-label brand.
“The banner change has multiple components to it,” Bill Donahoe, president and chief operating officer, Foodtown, told SN.
Among them: to focus more aggressively on produce while also creating an EDLP format in that department; and lower prices on Boar's Head products, milk and other products. The store also will not participate in the S&H Greenpoints program like other Foodtown stores, Donahoe said.
He said Foodtown is not focusing on converting any other Foodtowns but is in the process of marketing the new banner to non-Foodtown member stores. Foodtown is a marketing and purchasing cooperative that includes 68 stores under several different banners operated by 18 independent members.
