McGoldrick had an 18-year career with Melrose Park, Ill.-based Jewel Food Stores, beginning in 1956, holding various positions and rising to group vice president. In 1974 he became president and chief executive officer of Acme Markets in Philadelphia, and grew sales at the 362-store chain to more than $2.2 billion by 1980, when he resigned following a corporate takeover.

After serving as president of Montreal-based Steinberg's, then one of the largest supermarket chains in Canada, from 1982 to 1984, McGoldrick retired with his wife to South Orleans, Mass. His wife died after a long illness in 1989.
