Foxtrot Market opens second store in Washington, D.C.

The corner store and café chain continues expansion, bringing its total store count to 12

With the grand opening of its latest corner store and café in Washington, D.C., Monday, Foxtrot Market is living up to its recently announced expansion plans. The Chicago-based convenience/grocery/delivery chain’s second location in the D.C. area is in the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood at 650 Massachusetts Ave. NW. Foxtrot opened its first D.C. location in the Georgetown area earlier this month.

The new store brings Foxtrot’s total to 12 locations, with plans to add as many as nine stores in 2021. The chain’s other locations are in its hometown of Chicago and in Texas.

Launched as a delivery-only service by University of Chicago business student — and now CEO — Mike LaVitola in 2014, the company quickly moved into brick-and-mortar by reinventing the standard convenience store with smart merchandising, a hip atmosphere and a novel digital component. Customers can either browse Foxtrot’s curated selection of local, natural, emerging and conventional products in-store or shop its menu online, with doorstep delivery guaranteed in less than one hour. For those not local to a Foxtrot location, a curated selection of gift bundles is also available for nationwide shipping through the retailer’s Ship Shop platform.

At the new Mount Vernon triangle store, shelves are stocked with items by some of the DC region’s favorite brands and artisans, including prepared meals by local chef Erik Bruner Yang and goods from local brands like Gordy’s Pickles, Veggie Confetti, Mason Dixie and Pineapple Collaborative. Foxtrot is also the newest neighborhood socially distanced gathering place for coffee with friends, made with beans from local roaster Vigilante Coffee, or happy hour with coworkers on the store’s patio. Guests can pick out a bottle of wine from the over 200 bottles featured in store, all hand selected by Foxtrot’s sommelier Dylan Melvin, that range from everyday bottles (more than half are priced affordably at under $25) to special occasion and experimental wines.
