GREENSBORO, N.C. — After 25 years as a closely held family company, The Fresh Market has retained Goldman Sachs to explore outside investment opportunities. The gourmet grocer, based here, currently operates 80 stores in 18 states. “Because of our strong history, recent success and ongoing plans for growing the company, we are in a unique and ideal position right now to consider offers for outside investment,” the company said in a statement. It added it expected the process to take several months to complete. Fresh Market is led by Brett Berry, son of founders Ray and Beverly Berry.
