CARLISLE, Pa. — Ahold's Giant Food chain, based here, yesterday confirmed reports that it plans to open its first store in Philadelphia.The store is part of a 156,000-square-foot development in the northeast area of the city that is scheduled to begin later this year.

The store is expected to open in the first half of 2011, a spokesman for the chain told SN. It will be "one of Giant's larger conventional store prototypes," the spokesman said.

The chain currently has only one store within five miles of Philadelphia — in the town of Bensalem, Pa.
