FALLS CHURCH, Va. -- Wal-Mart Stores here will be required to submit a proposal to shareholders that the retailer disclose its charitable giving, according to the National Legal and Policy Center, the conservative group here that proposed the measure. The NLPC said that Wal-Mart had appealed to the Securities and Exchange Commission to exclude the resolution. The NLPC said it wants Wal-Mart to disclose its donations so as to expose the retailer‘s appeals to what the NLPC termed “controversial groups and causes,” supporting “advocacy of the liberal agenda,” including the environment, gay rights and health care reform. Wal-Mart, Bentonville, Ark., had no immediate comment. The NLPC was among the shareholder groups Wal-Mart was investigating as a “threat,” recent reports revealed. The retailer reportedly apologized to the group earlier this week.
