Food & Wine magazine touts the grocer’s private label, among other offerings
H-E-B has grabbed the top spot in a Food & Wine listicle highlighting the top supermarkets in the U.S.
Food & Wine said it was impressed with the San Antonio, Texas, retailer’s wide range of private label, the store’s curbside service and the in-store tortillerias. The magazine notes all three areas “have gotten even better.”
Wegmans, which finished behind H-E-B in second and is headquartered in Rochester, N.Y., was also applauded for its private label along with its baked goods and prepared foods.
Hy-Vee came in at No. 3 with its homestyle prepared meals and community involvement.
New Seasons and Market Basket were 4 and 5, respectively. According to Food & Wine, New Seasons, which serves Portland, Ore., has a strong organic focus. Market Basket covers the New England area and was named the top inflationary grocer in a dunnhumby ranking last year.
The German-based Lidl, which has been trying to gain traction in the U.S., comes in at No. 7 on the top supermarket list and is noted for its low-cost selection.
Winco Foods, Trader Joe’s, Publix, and Costco round out the top 10.
Notably absent from the list? Kroger, Whole Foods, and Walmart.
