FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Kentucky Grocers Association/Kentucky Association of Convenience Stores said it named Greg Godby, owner of Greg’s Supermarkets in Clinton and Bardwell, Ky., the association’s 2009 Grocer of the Year. Godby, a 35-year veteran of the industry, is a former Kroger manager who became a store owner in 1993 and is known for his close ties to the community.
KGA/KACS also said it inducted Bob Slone, chairman of Slone’s Signature Markets, a five-store chain in central and eastern Kentucky, into its Hall of Fame. He is a longtime operator who was instrumental in the formation of the KGA, and was also instrumental in forming the Kentucky Grocers Educations Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing college scholarships to the children of those involved in the retail food industry.
“The grocery business has been my entire professional life,” Slone said. “It’s all I’ve ever known and through the good days and the bad days, over the course of 45 years, this business has allowed my team to interact with hundreds of thousands of customers.”
