LOS ANGELES — A coalition of community, labor, environmental and faith-based organizations is scheduled Thursday to lead elected city officials and local media on a bus tour of East Los Angeles — an area east of downtown the group considers a "food desert" because of the lack of chain supermarkets and healthy food options.
The tour will be sponsored by the Alliance for Healthy and Responsible Grocery Stores, which said it is hoping to raise awareness among city officials about the problems facing underserved communities. The alliance asked the Los Angeles City Council in 2008 to create incentives to draw more businesses to those areas, and the council is scheduled to consider options in hearings later this month, a spokeswoman for the group told SN.
