Supercenter retailer Meijer today launched its Shop & Scan mobile checkout at all of its 42 Ohio stores.

The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based chain said Wednesday that the Shop & Scan service, accessed via the Meijer mobile app, is currently available at 179 stores in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.

To use the new checkout option, customers scan product barcodes with their smartphone and then add the items to their digital cart. As they shop the store, a running total is kept as groceries and other merchandise are scanned and bagged. Shoppers pay for their items by going to a self-checkout lane and then scanning their smartphone. (Click here to see video.)

"We're all challenged by time and busy schedules, so Shop & Scan allows customers the opportunity to truly be in control of their shopping trip, from the moment they walk in our stores to the minute they walk out," Tom Wilson, regional vice president at Meijer, said in a statement. "Customers are appreciative of the simplicity of scanning and bagging as they go because they can save time and avoid lines, speeding up their checkout experience."

Meijer noted that Shop & Scan works with its mPerks rewards program. In fact, the company said, the ability to clip any mPerks coupons for items scanned and an integrated shopping list are the mobile checkout service’s most popular features.

Shop & Scan made its debut in November 2017 through a pilot at 54 stores in Michigan, starting in the Grand Rapids area and then rolling out to more locations during 2018. Most recently, the service was expanded to 23 stores in Chicago and northwestern Indiana in March.

According to Wilson, the Meijer mobile app — available in iOS and Android versions — has been downloaded over 1.1 million times since the Shop & Scan pilot in Michigan, and during that time span more than 80% of customers have repeatedly used Shop & Scan while shopping.

Plans call for Shop & Scan to roll out to more Meijer stores this year. Overall, the retailer operates 246 supercenters and grocery stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin. All locations also offer Meijer Home Delivery and online grocery pickup services.
