Union workers at Metro stores in Windsor, Ontario, on Sunday voted to approve contract concessions that will allow at least two area stores to remain open.

United Food and Commercial Workers Locals 175 and 633 said the Montreal-based retailer initially proposed closing two stores as part of a new business plan for four Metro stores in the city — evidently, their conversion to the discount Food Basics banner.

The UFCW said affected members would receive monetary packages to help offset the reduced wage rates under the different agreement.

"The Union fully supports the membership's decision on this difficult issue and will continue to work in their best interests moving forward," UFCW Local 175 President Shawn Haggerty said in a release. "I'd also ask that when grocery shopping, the community consider the value of continuing to support unionized workers at one of the few remaining Canadian retailers."

UFCW Locals 175 and 633 represent approximately 16,000 workers at Metro, Food Basics and Barn banners in Ontario.
