IOWA CITY — Strength as a source of natural and organic foods helped members of the National Cooperative Grocers Association post more than $945 million in combined sales during 2007, the NCGA here said Friday. That figure places cooperative grocers among the top three sellers of natural, organic and local foods. “As demand for natural and organic food continues to grow among consumers, we think it’s phenomenal that one of the nation's original providers of organics — the neighborhood co-op — is part of a collective that’s grossing nearly $1 billion in sales,” Robynn Shrader, chief executive officer for NCGA, said in a statement. The organization has set a goal to achieve $3 billion in combined member sales by 2020.
