ST. LOUIS — Less than a year after it opened, specialty grocer Straub’s Markets will close its new store in Ellisville, Mo.

The 40,000-square-foot location, which opened in December, was Straub’s first new store in 40 years and the largest by far for the retailer, which operates four other stores in the St. Louis area.

Officials in a statement published in local newspapers said the store “never rose to the sales level it needed to be sustainable.” The downturn in the economy was also a factor for the store, which will close Oct. 31.

The developer of the project has spoken to other food retailers about taking over the site, reports said.
