NY Grocers to Pay Back Wages to Baggers

NEW YORK — Six supermarkets here have agreed to pay more than $300,000 in back wages to baggers after an investigation by the state Department of Labor, the DOL said.

Two other supermarkets are in negotiation to pay an estimated additional $400,000 for wage violations. The six supermarkets that have settled did not pay the baggers any wages at all while they were working and instead allowed them to collect tips, according to the DOL.

“It is outrageous that employers would pay no wages at all and leave their hardworking employees with an empty bag at the end of the week," the DOL said.

The six that have settled include: an Associated Supermarket in Queens; a Key Food in Brooklyn; a Pioneer Supermarket in Brooklyn; a Food Bazaar in Brooklyn; a C-Town in the Bronx; and a Fine Fare in the Bronx. A Pioneer Supermarket in the Bronx and a C-Town Supermarket in Manhattan are negotiating settlements.
