PORTLAND, Ore. — Union workers at Albertsons, Fred Meyer and Safeway stores here have reached a tentative agreement with the chains on a four-year contract. Leaders of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555 here have recommended their members approve the new contract in a vote scheduled for this Saturday.

"We are pleased to have reached an agreement that provides fair terms and conditions of employment for our associates while allowing Fred Meyer to remain competitive in the Portland market," Melinda Merrill, a spokeswoman for Fred Meyer, said in a statement.

The union said details of the tentative agreement will not be released until the contract is ratified.
