THIBODAUX, La. — Anthony J. Rouse, founder of Rouses Markets here, died last week at age 79.
Rouse, who grew up working in his father’s wholesale produce business, left in 1960 to open his own grocery store in Houma, La., with his cousin. The store was renamed Rouses in 1975, and the company gradually expanded. In 2007 it acquired the 21-unit Southern Division of A&P, increasing the company’s size to its total today of 35 stores in Louisiana and Mississippi. \
Rouses stores have long been known for their emphasis on fresh local fare, gourmet offerings and prepared foods.
Rouse is survived by his wife, Joyce Guillory Rouse; one sister; six children; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
