WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — Shaw's Supermarkets here, a division of Minneapolis-based Supervalu, said Wednesday it plans to close five stores by mid-February — three in Massachusetts and two in Rhode Island.

In a prepared statement Shaw's said the stores were unprofitable and the decision to close them was "guided by what is best for Shaw's long-term growth and success as a whole."

The stores are located in New Bedford, Stoneham and Revere, Mass., and in Warwick and Johnston, R.I. The company declined to disclose the number of employees that will be impacted.

Last year, the banner exited Connecticut with the sale or closure of all 18 of its stores there.
