MINNEAPOLIS — Target Corp. here said Friday it plans to build and manage its own platform for Target.com, rather than relying on Amazon as its strategic partner.
The two companies have worked together since 2001. Target said it plans to launch the new platform prior to the holiday season in 2011.
“Amazon has been an important strategic partner since we relaunched Target.com in 2001,” said Steve Eastman, president of Target.com, “and the strength of Amazon's technology and fulfillment services has been a contributing factor to Target.com's success.
"However, to deliver a customized multi-channel experience for Target guests, we believe it is in Target's best interest going forward to assume full control over the design and management of Target’s ecommerce technology platform, fulfillment and guest services operations.”
The two companies will continue to work together through the end of their contract in 2011 “to optimize performance of the existing platform,” Eastman said.
