Target Corp. said it is planning to open its smallest store yet, a 20,000-square-foot TargetExpress, this July in its headquarters market of Minneapolis.

The store, located near the University of Minnesota campus, will carry HBC and grocery — including a larger selection of grab-and-go foods — and will also include a pharmacy, Target said. General merchandise will include a basic selection of essential home décor and portable electronics.

“This is an exciting opportunity to test and learn as we continue exploring new ways to meet our guests’ needs and exceed their expectations,” said John Griffith, EVP of property development, Target, in a statement. “Our focus is on ensuring the Target shopping experience is available when, where and how guests want it.”

Target said the store, which will be less than half the size of its small-format CityTarget stores, would include new innovations gleaned from that format, including a new checkout lane configuration geared to high traffic and smaller basket sizes.

“We’ll carefully evaluate this new format to determine plans for future growth, so stay tuned,” Griffith said.
