GREENVILLE, S.C. — Trader Joe's may be eyeing this city for its first South Carolina store, according to local reports.

The Greenville News reported yesterday that the chain, based in Monrovia, Calif., and owned by the same German investors who own the Aldi discount banner, has applied for a license to sell wine and beer at a location here.

Trader Joe's operates three locations in Charlotte, N.C., but none in South Carolina. Bi-Lo, Wal-Mart, Publix and Ingles Market, respectively, are the market-share leaders in Greenville, according to the 2009 Metro Market Studies Grocery Distribution Analysis and Guide, although Food Lion has recently been expanding there.
