Wegmans Food Markets is in negotiations to build a new store in Medford, Mass., the city's mayor said.

The store if completed would join four existing Wegmans stores in Massachusetts, located in Burlington, Chestnut Hill, Northborough and Westwood. A fifth, in Natick, was announced by the Rochester, N.Y.-based retailer earlier this year with a tentative opening date in 2017.

In a state of the city address Sunday, Medford mayor Michael McGlynn said Wegmans would be a part a renovation of the city’s Meadow Glen Mall. A Wegmans spokeswoman would not confirm an opening but told the Boston Globe Tuesday that the retailer was in negotiations for a site in Medford. Wegmans currently operates 88 stores in six states.
