Retailers Recall Cheese Linked to Deadly Listeria Outbreak

AUSTIN, Texas — Whole Foods Market, Kroger Co. and Roundy's Supermarkets have recalled cheese from Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese Company in response to an ongoing listeria outbreak that has resulted in five illnesses and one death.

Whole Foods cuts the Crave Brothers Les Freres cheese and packages it with Whole Foods scale labels. The retailer has placed signs in stores to alert customers of the recall and will give a full refund to those that purchased the product.

Roundy's banners Copps, Metro Market, Mariano's, Rainbow and Pick 'n Save also recalled the Les Freres cheese, as did Kroger, from its Dillons, Baker's, Fred Meyer, Ralphs, QFC and Gerbes stores.

More foodborne illness outbreak coverage

Crave Brothers had previously recalled its Les Freres, Petit Frere and Petit Frere with Truffles varieties due to a Food and Drug Administration investigation linking the cheeses to several cases of listeria. The cheeses were sold at retail and foodservice outlets and by mail order nationwide.

Illnesses were reported in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
