Aldi US is planning to reopen a store in Indiana on Thursday, but the Midwest is not the only region where the discount grocer is expanding. A new store is also set to open on the West Coast on Thursday.

The Indiana store, which is located in Gary at 5995 W. Ridge Road about 25 miles southeast of downtown Chicago, will feature a streamlined shopping experience and is part of Aldi’s ongoing initiative to remodel and expand existing stores.

Other updates to the store include an improved layout and refrigeration to accommodate an expanded fresh and convenient food selection, according to a press release from the company.

“We have invested in remodeling our stores to ensure they are designed to make grocery shopping smarter, faster and easier,” said Heather McCarthy, Valparaiso regional vice president for Aldi, in a statement. “With the updated Gary store, shoppers will notice a new look with more fresh and convenient items at the reliably low prices Aldi fans rave about.”

The store also features open ceilings and natural lighting, and it is built with environmentally friendly materials.

Illinois, the state which boasts the most Aldi stores, will soon have another location. On Oct. 26, Aldi will open a new store at 960 S. Barrington Road in Streamwood, a northwest suburb of Chicago.

“Our grand opening is right around the corner and we’re stocking our shelves with aisle after aisle of products you love,” according to the grocer’s website.

The Batavia, Illinois-based grocery retailer’s West Coast store slated to open on Thursday is Aldi’s second store in Santa Clarita, 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

The discount grocer, which frequently opens multiple new stores per week, revealed plans earlier this year to add a total of 120 new locations in 2023, bringing Aldi’s store count nationwide to more than 2,400 by the end of the year.

Founded in 1961, Aldi now operates over 2,330 locations nationwide, according to the retailer’s website.

CORRECTION: Aldi is opening its second store in Santa Clarita, California. Due to incorrect information from an Aldi spokesperson, WGB had reported it was the first. The story has been updated to correct the error.
