H-E-B to start a $10M remodel of its store in Uvalde, Texas

Work is slated to begin on the project on Halloween and be completed by the end of May, according to documents filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Texas grocer H-E-B is embarking on a $10 million remodel of its supermarket in Uvalde, according to documents filed with the state’s Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Work on the 79,461-square-foot store is expected to begin at the end of October and be completed by May 26, the project details said.

H-E-B did not respond to a WGB request to comment on the scope of the work, but the grocer told local media that the money would be used to upgrade the store’s refrigerators.

In June, H-E-B announced it would commit $10 million to build a new elementary school in Uvalde, following a school shooting that killed 21 young people at Robb Elementary School.

“Our first store in Uvalde opened in 1959, and Uvalde people are our people,” H-E-B’s Chairman Charles Butt said in a statement at the time. “As we continue to mourn tremendous loss, I join with my family and H-E-B in working to ensure the Uvalde community can move forward from this tragic event.”

H-E-B is slated to open a new store in Frisco, Texas, Wednesday, part of the grocer’s planned expansion into the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The new store, which began construction in June 2021, will include both a pharmacy drive-thru and a True Texas BBQ restaurant drive-thru, the company said.

In May, H-E-B broke ground for a new store in Allen, Texas, also in the DFW area. It is scheduled to open next year.

H-E-B is the largest private employer in Texas, with more than 420 supermarkets and 137 employees in Texas and Mexico.
