Publix Vice Chairman to Retire

Publix Super Markets Vice Chairman Barney Barnett revealed his plans to retire after 50 years with the company. 

Following his retirement, Barnett will remain on the board of directors for Publix, where he has been named vice chairman emeritus. 

Publix CEO Todd Jones praised Barnett's commitment to Publix's culture, adding that he has "helped pave the path for our future successes." 

"It has been an honor and privilege to work alongside him," Jones said. "We will miss him but also wish him well as he starts this next chapter of his life.”

Barnett joined Publix in 1969 as an internal auditor in Lakeland, Fla. He was promoted to controller in 1977 and VP of administration in 1986. He was promoted to EVP in 1988 before moving into his current role in 1998. 

During his career, Barnett has received multiple awards. The United Way of Central Florida named him Philanthropist of the Year in 2016 and presented him with the Alexis de Tocqueville Society Award in 2002. He also received the Governor’s Business Leader Award in 2010 and was inducted into the Tampa Bay Business Hall of Fame in 2002.
