Services Set for Price Chopper Matriarch Jane N. Golub

Funeral services for Jane N. Golub, a prominent grocery industry leader and philanthropist, will be held April 23 at Temple Gates of Heaven Synagogue in Schenectady, N.Y.

The service for the 80-year-old matriarch of the Golub Corp., operator of the Price Chopper and Market 32 chains, who died April 16 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after a short illness, will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be open to the public. She was on vacation with her husband of 56 years, Neil, at the time.

“We are heartbroken at the loss of our best friend, soulmate, wife, mother and grandmother. We will forever miss her fiercely independent style, grace, good humor and love,” Neil Golub and daughter Mona Golub said in a statement.

The family’s joint statement also said Jane’s impact on their lives and throughout the Capital Region community is impossible to measure. “We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support from so many in our community and beyond who have been touched by her humanity."

An elementary school teacher earlier in her career, Jane Golub was widely admired for her philanthropic work, including with the Schenectady Day Nursery, Gates of Heaven congregation and anti-bullying initiatives.

A statement from Scott Grimmett, president and CEO of Price Chopper/Market 32, echoed the family’s sentiments: “The entire Price Chopper/Market 32 family is in mourning today over the passing of Jane Golub. Jane has been an important member of our team for generations and has been a vital contributor to our growth and success. More importantly, though, Jane has been our friend, family and role model. She taught us much about caring for our community and making our hometown a better place for all who live here. While we are, obviously, saddened today, we are grateful for having had the opportunity to work with and learn from Jane, and we are committed to carrying on her legacy of loving our family and supporting our communities.”

A statement from local community leaders also reflect Jane Golub’s legacy of civic and business leadership: “The town of Niskayuna and the Capital Region have lost an icon. Few women have done more for our community than Jane Golub. Her civic leadership was inspirational." 

Born Dec. 10, 1938, Golub attended Bronx High School of Science for two years before her family moved to Queens, where she graduated from Forest Hills High School in 1956. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Michigan and in 1965, earned her masters degree in elementary education from SUNY Oneonta in Otsego County, N.Y. She married her husband Neil, who also attended the University of Michigan, in 1963, and she taught third grade in the Niskayuna Central School District for 23 years, retiring in 1986.

Jane Golub began her second career in business at Price Chopper Supermarkets and Golub Corp., where she was manager of samples and sales, director of vendor marketing programs and director of in-store marketing programs, among other roles.
