Bashas’ executive John “Johnny” Basha has been named senior vice president of real estate strategy and management for parent The Raley’s Companies.

With the promotion, announced Wednesday, Basha’s role expands to cover The Raley’s Companies’ full portfolio of enterprise real estate assets. The son of Bashas’ co-founder Ike Basha, he previously served as senior VP of real estate for the Chandler, Arizona-based supermarket chain.

“It is an honor to be a part of an innovative, family-owned business that is unwavering in their commitment to the enrichment of the communities they serve,” John Basha said in a statement. “I look forward to taking an active role in The Raley’s Companies’ continued growth and success by building new stores that cater to the vast array of unique markets.”

West Sacramento, California-based Raley’s acquired The Bashas’ Family of Stores in December 2021, which led to the formation of The Raley’s Companies. Overall, The Raley’s Companies operates a retail network of more than 235 stores in California, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico, including the Raley’s division banners of Raley’s, Bel Air Markets, Nob Hill Foods, Raley’s O-N-E Market, Food Source and Sak ’N Save and the Bashas’ division banners of Bashas’, Bashas’ Diné, Food City, AJ’s Fine Foods and Eddie’s Country Store.

Raley’s noted that Basha “has been instrumental” in expanding Bashas’, AJ’s Fine Foods, Bashas’ Dine’ and Food City banners across Arizona and New Mexico through working with local developers and elected officials. He will now manage the real estate strategy for all Raley’s Companies divisions.

The grocer added that, in recent years, it has invested in dozens of remodels in Arizona, California and Nevada—as well as on the Navajo Nation in Shiprock, New Mexico, and Kayenta, Arizona—and opened new stores throughout Northern California. Plans call for the company to step up its pace over the next few years.

“We are grateful to have Johnny leading real estate for our growing company. We look forward to Johnny now also applying his expertise to Northern California and Nevada,” stated The Raley’s Companies Chief Financial Officer Tiffanie Burkhalter. “With his strategic mindset and results-driven approach, I am confident we can expand our reach to new communities through new store openings and acquisitions of like-minded independent grocers.”
