Cub to Source From Hydroponic Greenhouse

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Starting this fall, Cub Foods’ Twin City locations will be sourcing produce from a local hydroponic greenhouse built by BrightFarms and operated by J&J Distributing.
The 38,000 square-foot greenhouse, located on the grounds of a St. Paul warehouse (bottom right), will grow 350,000 pounds of lettuce, herbs and tomatoes, according to a BrightFarms release.
"Cub Foods is committed to being the local neighborhood grocer for customers throughout the Twin Cities and we are excited about the many possibilities this greenhouse can present in the future," Chuck Lynch, senior vice president of operations for the Supervalu banner Cub Foods, said in a release.
"Consumers will have new opportunities to get fresh, locally grown and sustainable produce year-round as a result of this project."
In related news, Whole Foods Market’s upcoming Brooklyn store will grow produce in a 10,000 square-foot rooftop garden, according to a USA Today report.
"You can't get more locally grown than that," David Lannon, executive vice president of operations, told USA Today.
