ST. LOUIS — Schnuck Markets partnered with Frieda's specialty produce to ring in the Chinese New Year with a special eight-hour “Produce University” course on Jan. 24.

Gary Killion, produce manager at a Schnucks location in Collinsville, Ill., said shoppers had the opportunity to sample several items and ask questions about Asian fruits and vegetables, ranging from festive citrus fruits such as oroblancos, kumquats and pummelos, to ginger roots, water chestnuts, snow peas and baby corn.

The 9 a.m.-to-5 p.m. promotion also highlighted ways to incorporate these produce items into meals celebrating the Year of the Ox.

“We are pleased to continue offering these educational programs, and Chinese New Year is the perfect food-focused occasion for learning about the great variety of fresh Asian specialties,” said Mike O'Brien, vice president of produce at Schnucks. “Produce University is a great way to broaden our customers' tastes and highlight our produce teams as knowledgeable and dependable resources.”

Frieda's has been partnering with supermarket retailers on Produce University education and sampling events since 1989.
