Big Y Donates $40,000.00 to Red Cross for Typhoon Haiyan Disaster Relief

Officials from Big Y World Class Markets presented a check for $40,000 to the American Red Cross to support Red Cross relief efforts in the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan. Funds for Red disaster relief were raised through a special in-store customer and employee donation program in all Big Y Connecticut and Massachusetts stores. The community and employee donations along with additional support from Big Y resulted in a donation of $40,000.00, which will be support of the ongoing relief efforts in the Philippines, where a multi-national team is working to support the immediate needs and recovery plans of people affected by the typhoon. Donald D’Amour, CEO of Big Y Foods presented the contribution to American Red Cross Connecticut Chapter Senior Director of Resource Development Chris Donovan at the West Hartford Big Y World Class Market on December 17. “We are grateful to the Big Y family and their customers for making this generous gift to help the people of the Philippines,” says Donovan said. “Big Y World Class Market, its employees and customers have always been quick to step up to help neighbors in need, near or far.” Thanks to the public’s generous support, the Red Cross has been able to provide food, shelter, relief supplies and comfort to thousands of people in the Philippines. Big Y, its customers and employees have a strong tradition of supporting those in need. Past initiatives include campaigns to support both international and domestic disaster relief efforts. Big Y presented a donation in support of Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. After the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, Big Y presented donations to the American Red Cross totaling $100,000. When a tornado struck the Springfield, Massachusetts, area in 2011, Big Y, its customers and employees donated $141,000 to Red Cross tornado relief and $75,000 for Hurricane Sandy Relief in 2012. Most recently, through similar efforts, Big Y Foods presented donations to the American Red Cross totaling $40,000 for relief efforts do to the Oklahoma Tornadoes that struck in May of 2013.
