SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Big Y Foods here reportedly plans to open a new format - called Fresh Acres - later this year at a shuttered store here.

The store will emphasize fresh and natural foods, according to published reports. It will be located in a 30,000-square-foot Big Y store that has been closed for several years, the reports indicated.

Company officials could not be reached for comment last week.

The store will reportedly feature a farmers' market-style produce section featuring locally grown products, plus a meal solutions area and, in the grocery section, a small assortment of staples limited to one size or possibly one brand.

The main entrance will feature a 60-foot "air door" - a wall of moving air that will enable some merchandise to be displayed outside the store for most of the year, the reports indicated.

Although the store is expected to carry some Big Y private-label items, it will not be otherwise identified with the rest of the chain, reports said.

At 30,000 square feet, the store is smaller than the chain's 65,000-square-foot prototype and is reportedly geared to quick, convenient shopping trips.

Big Y operates 54 stores, including 52 conventional locations and two fine wine, liquor and gourmet food stores called Table & Vine and Town & Country. Sales in 2005 were $1.2 billion.
