MONTVALE, N.J. -- Christian Haub has been elevated to chief executive officer of A&P here, the company was expected to announce last week.
The change marks the first full transition in the company's CEO ranks in 18 years.
For the past year Haub, 33, has been president and co-chief executive, sharing the CEO role with James Wood, 68, the chain's chairman, who has been CEO since 1980.
Wood now retires as CEO -- relinquishing the day-to-day management role -- but remains as chairman. Haub retains the president title.
Haub is the son of Erivan Haub, who, along with two other sons, are the shareholders of A&P's parent company, Tengelmann, Mulheim, Germany.
Haub joined A&P in 1991 as vice president of real estate and development. He was named president and chief operating officer in 1993.
A number of structural and management changes in the past year at A&P have set the stage for Haub's elevation. The company named a chief operating officer and CEOs for operating units in the New York metropolitan area, the Midwest and Canada.
