Williams, the chain's president, gave up the operating chief title when he was named chief executive officer. Hayward reports to Williams. Hayward, 40, was vice president of store operations at Buttrey Food & Drug Stores, Great Falls, Mont., where he worked on re-engineering store operations and reducing store inventory and labor costs, according to a statement from Carr Gottstein.
Williams said, "As a diverse enterprise with interests in freight, warehousing and distribution in addition to our core supermarket business, we need a chief operating officer who can integrate these areas and leverage their strengths. "Larry's recent responsibilities will help us bring more focus to our important backstage activities.
Senior VP Is Named at Kings
WEST CALDWELL, N.J. -- Kings Super Markets here has named Alan C. Levitan to the new position of senior vice president of sales and merchandising. He reports to Jim Meister, president and chief executive officer.
Levitan is responsible for managing procurement, sales planning and marketing for the 19-store chain. He has been with Kings for two years as vice president of perishables merchandising.
Richard Durante was named area director, a new position. He is responsible for supervising the operations of several stores. He reports to Chuck Joseph, vice president of operations.
Durante has been with the company since 1987, most recently as resident supervisor of the company's Short Hills store.
Big V Taps Hittman as VP
FLORIDA, N.Y. -- Big V Supermarkets here has named Stephen Hittman vice president of real estate, a new position.
Hittman was most recently director of real estate finance.
He is responsible for directing all real estate activities for the 32-store chain, such as new store development, financing, and the replacement or expansion of existing stores. He reports to Neal Madera, senior vice president of corporate development and general counsel.
Big V, the largest member of the Wakefern Food Corp. cooperative, operates 32 ShopRite Supermarkets throughout the Hudson Valley in New York.
Rite Aid Appoints New Chairman
HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Rite Aid Corp. here has named Martin Grass chairman and chief executive officer, effective March 6. He succeeds his father, Alex Grass, who has held these positions since founding the company in 1962. He will continue with the company as a consultant, as well as chairman of the executive committee.
Alex Grass is also chairman of Super Rite Corp., Harrisburg, Pa., which was created as an offshoot of Rite Aid.
Martin Grass currently serves as president and chief operating officer. Those posts will be filled by Timothy J. Noonan, executive vice president of drugstore operations.
Publix Names Rhodes VP
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Publix Super Markets here has named James H. Rhodes vice president of human resources, effective April 1.
Rhodes, most recently director of human resources, succeeds Edward H. "Bud" Ruth, who will retire after a 46-year career with the company. In his new position, Rhodes will report to Barney Barnett, executive vice president of Publix.
