Harris Teeter Names Gillespie
llespie has joined Harris Teeter here as director of personnel administration. He oversees all employee benefit programs, as well as wage and salary administration. He is also responsible for the development and enforcement of personnel policies and procedures.
In his new position, Gillespie reports to John Channon, senior vice president of finance and administration. He succeeds an individual who has left the company but whom Harris Teeter did not identify.
Gillespie previously served as vice president of human resources at Randalls Food Markets, Houston.
Senior VP Appointed at Tops
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Tops Markets here has named David Whipple senior vice president of human resources.
He succeeds Mike Strout, who has left the company.
Whipple most recently was senior manager of human resources at Cincinnati-based Kroger Co.'s Livonia, Mich., division.
He reports to Larry Castellani, president and chief executive officer of Tops.
Manager of Finance Tapped by Haggen
BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Haggen Inc. here has named Jeff Haggen manager of finance and real estate, a new position.
He has been with Haggen for some 16 years, most recently as a store manager. He reports to Dale Henley, senior vice president of finance and chief financial officer.
Haggen also named Scott Smith advertising director. Smith succeeds an employee who recently left the company.
Prior to joining Haggen, Smith was national advertising and promotions manager for Daiwa Corp., Garden Grove, Calif., a manufacturer of fishing tackle and golf products. He now reports to Don Haggen, chairman and chief executive officer.
Retail VP Named at Bay Area
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- Bay Area Foods, parent company of Petrini Markets here, has named Joe Benetti to the new position of vice president of retail operations.
Benetti is responsible for the company's 13 Petrini stores. He reports to Ron Glass, president and chief executive officer of Bay Area Foods.
For the last few years, Benetti has operated Broadway Food Center, a specialty food store in Burlingame, Calif. He is also the former president and chief operating officer of Oakland, Calif.-based Safeway's Pak 'N Save warehouse division. In another change, Jim Pack has been named to the new position of vice president of marketing for Bay Area Foods.
Pack was vice president of marketing, merchandising and procurement at Smitty's Super Valu, Phoenix. In his new post, he reports to Glass.
Byerly's Appoints Laska VP
EDINA, Minn. -- Byerly's here has named Tami Laska vice president of human resources, a new position.
Laska joined Byerly's as director of human resources last August. Prior to that, she served as employee services director at Supervalu's Minneapolis division. She reports to Dale Riley, chief operating officer.
Byerly's operates 10 supermarkets in the Minneapolis area and has announced plans to open 10 new stores in Chicago within the next five years.
Independent Grocers Taps Brown
ABILENE, Texas -- Independent Grocers here has named Mark Brown president and general manager. Brown succeeds Jim Mullins, who held the position since 1982, but recently retired.
Brown is also a retail consultant with West Texas Co-op. He was previously employed by Safeway, Oakland, Calif.; Village Super Market, Sweetwater, Tex.; and Lone Star Markets, which was later sold to United Super Markets in Lubbock, Texas.
