Karen Johnson, right, vice president of consumer affairs at Borden Inc., was honored recently by the Food Marketing Institute as the recipient of the Esther Peterson Consumer Service Award. During a dinner and presentation in her honor in Washington, Johnson was joined at the lectern by Esther Peterson, left, a former consumer affairs adviser to three U.S. presidents and to Giant Food, and by Tim Hammonds, center, president and chief executive officer of FMI. Johnson launched Borden's consumer affairs department in 1976 and was the innovator behind the company's Consumer Response department, which handles more than 100,000 product inquiries a year.
