Meijer Inc. has followed up the opening of its first supercenters in the greater Cleveland area with the launch of same-day online grocery delivery.

Meijer Home Delivery, powered by Shipt, kicked off yesterday at three new supercenters that opened last week in Avon, Mentor and Stow, Ohio. Available to more than 90,000 households in suburban Cleveland, the service enables customers to shop a list of 70,000 items — including groceries, daily staples and other products — via the ShopMeijer website or mobile app and have their order delivered to their door within a few hours.

Along with fresh produce and other foods, products eligible for home delivery include essentials like diapers, cases of water and pet food as well as toys, electronics, school supplies, health and beauty aids, and beer and wine. Customers can also earn mPerks Rewards on qualifying purchases and redeem them at any Meijer store.

"We know how busy people are these days, so we do everything we can to make shopping as easy and convenient as possible," Tom Wilson, regional vice president at Meijer, said in a statement. "Meijer Home Delivery lets people shop whenever they want from wherever they want and have their order delivered at a time that's most convenient for them, whether it's early in the morning or late at night."

Shipt personal shoppers pick, bag and deliver items ordered through Meijer Home Delivery. Customers can communicate with Shipt shoppers via text to provide special instructions or preferences, such as the degree of ripeness for produce.

The service costs $99 a year for free, unlimited delivery of orders $35 or more. Orders less than $35 are charged a $7 flat delivery fee. To support the launch, Meijer and Shipt are offering area residents an annual membership for $49.

Overall, Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer operates more than 245 supercenters in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin. About 230 of the stores offer home delivery and store pickup service through Shipt. Currently, Ohio and Michigan are the only states where alcohol is included as part of the Meijer Home Delivery.

The 155,000-square-foot supercenters in Avon, Mentor and Stow opened on May 16, which Meijer said marked the first time that it opened three stores in one day. The openings continue an expansion into northeastern Ohio that the company announced in 2017. Meijer now has 42 stores in Ohio and opened its first location in the state in 1981 in the Columbus area. The company also operates a distribution center and dairy processing facility in Tipp City, Ohio.
