STP Recalls Tire Repair Item

P brand here is voluntarily recalling its STP Flat Tire Repair Product, which has been available to consumers since February 1992, because of potential dangers to those who do not follow the kit's specific instructions.

"Recent developments have led us to believe that under certain circumstances the product has the potential to cause serious personal injury to those who attempt to make a permanent repair on an inflated tire with STP Flat Tire Repair in it," said Mark Haglund, automotive products marketing vice president.

The product was also marketed as STP Flat Fixer. Haglund said the product was safe for consumers when used as directed.

STP has set up a toll-free number for consumers to call to receive a full-value refund and instructions about proper disposal of the product.

About 2.8 million units of the product have been sold nationally to customers since its introduction. According to STP, the product withdrawal will not have any material effect on its corporate earnings or financial position.

STP noted hazards also may exist with many other tire inflator products, but may not be well known to persons repairing tires.
